Richele Floyd, our Education Director, began her journey as a full time employee on the SUN ‘n FUN Expo Campus in the middle of our sold out summer camps. In an effort to get to know her better, the SUN ‘n FUN staff sent in a series of hard hitting questions. The entire SUN ‘n FUN staff welcomes Richele into our small family and we hope this post allows you to get to know her as well.

  • Why did you choose to become an educator instead of being a pilot?

You know, it’s interesting where life leads you. Being an educator chose me. I never dreamed of teaching, but when the opportunity arose, I found something that I was good at AND enjoyed. I have to thank my former boss, Mr. Damien Moses, for that. I was not given restrictions like many teachers are; if there were educational value in it, he would let me try it (at least once).

  • Why were you initially interested in aviation? Has that changed?

As a child I did a lot of traveling and I always loved to fly. When people would ask, I wanted to be an astronaut when I grew up. Nothing has changed, I still want to be an astronaut when I grow up!

  • Why did you decide to become a pilot?

My dad was (and still is) a private pilot and took me on my first ride in a single engine airplane when I was 14. I knew then that it was something I was going to do. There is no other feeling like it in the world and plus, I love the science behind it J

  • Please explain how you launched a cricket into space.

Aw, poor Neil! Neil was a cockroach that we attached to the payload of our high altitude weather balloon. It’s a long story but you can find it at #SaveNeil. I do have photos and data from other payloads that we retrieved but unfortunately this one is still MIA.

  • When did you start playing tennis and why?

The first time I picked up a racket was in October 2015. I went to Daytona to watch my husband’s team compete in the state championship and it looked so fun that I decided that I wanted to learn how to play. Now, almost a year later, my team is already guaranteed a spot in Daytona this October.

  • I heard you were an artist. Can you share some of your work or explain your favorite medium to work with?

The majority of what I have done is painting and/or drawing. The most recent thing I did was “Welcome” flower pots and the “Book Exchange” box for the homeowners association. I find it relaxing and try to make time for it whenever possible.

  • What is your favorite color?

When given the right element, every color is beautiful

  • What is something you do for fun?

I love to fish

  • What is your favorite kind of music to listen to?

Depends on my mood. I recently went to an Andrea Bocelli concert, it was amazing! But I also love everything from Bob Seger to Imagine Dragons

  • What is your favorite memory?

I don’t have one specific one but I love that my parents thought it was important for my brother and I to see the world and be exposed to different cultures and lifestyles. As a result, I have a lot of memories traveling the world.

  • How do you hope to influence the people you work with every day?

I’m a very happy person. I’m always smiling, always polite, and always do my best to be helpful.
