In response to a projected pilot shortage in 2032, SUN ‘n FUN initiated a philosophy to “Build a Brighter Future through Aviation” while adding aviation professionals to the aerospace industry. SUN ‘n FUN contributes in excess of $430,000 annually, making scholarships available to cover the cost of flight lessons as well as college tuition for students graduating from CFAA and headed into aerospace careers. To date, funding has provided 115 scholarships that have produced 29 private pilots and 55 students who have soloed an aircraft. 20 students have received aviation-related college scholarships.
The Aerospace Center for Excellence on the SUN ‘n FUN Convention Campus offers year round STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education programs and activities. Students at CFAA have the opportunity to dual enroll in aviation career tracks at Polk State College and Traviss Career Academy. Beginning in the 2015-2016 school year, students will attend classes in the Piedmont Aerospace Experience, the only fully-functional Boeing 727 being used an interactive learning center on a high school campus.
