LAKELAND, FL – SUN ‘n FUN and the Aerospace Center for Excellence (A.C.E) recently completed another successful summer camp season. More than 130 students came from nine states and the Bahamas to experience the thrill of aviation at the SUN ‘n FUN Convention Campus.

The STEMtastic camp held more than 40 students ranging in age from 7-12 and covered daily themes in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, thus the STEM acronym. Topics of interest included robotics, programming, airplanes, rocketry, wave forms, nature and more, and were conducted under the supervision of certified State of Florida teachers.

The Destination Aviation camp had more than 90 students ranging from 11-18 years of age. Students experienced taking control of an airplane under the supervision of a flight instructor during the camp.

“The purpose of our camps is to let these young individuals experience the thrill of aviation and be introduced into the aerospace industry,” said Aerospace Center for Excellence Executive Director Robb Williams. “These young men and women represent the next generation of Aerospace professionals and we could not have had this happen without the help of our partners at Polk State College, Flight Safety International (Vero Beach), Draken International, Lakeland Linder Airport, and Piper Aircraft.”

Next year’s STEMtastic and Destination Aviation camps are scheduled for June 20th through August 5th, 2016.
“With our camps, we lay the groundwork for a natural progression of both knowledge and interest level into the aerospace industry by starting these young individuals with our STEMtastic and Destination Aviation camps,” added Williams. “From there, we see progression into our more mature-aged camps, then continuing their education at the Central Florida Aerospace Academy and Polk State College, and attending our annual Career Fair during the annual SUN ‘n FUN Fly-In.”
